Most of us have makeup, skincare, and haircare routines that we follow almost religiously. So what’s so foreign about having a lip care routine?

The skin on your lips is incredibly delicate and needs regular attention. Moreover, a ton of problems like dryness, chapping, and cracking are caused by a lack of care. This guide will make things clear. Let’s unpack how lip care products help maintain lips so you have the perfect soft and juicy pout every time.

    Why Lips Need Special Care

First things first, why do lips need special care? If you have a detailed skincare routine, why use special products for your lips? The most obvious reason is that the skin on your lips differs from the skin on the rest of your face and body. This makes them more prone to dryness, cracking, and irritation.

Moreover, unlike other parts of the skin, your lips lack the oil glands that help keep your skin soft and hydrated. As a result, your lips can easily get dehydrated and become dry. This is especially true for harsh weather conditions. This is why your lips become incredibly sensitive during winter.

During summer, your lips are exposed to excessive sunlight, which can lead to dryness and darkness. Some people also have a habit of licking their lips, contributing to darkness. Due to all of these reasons, your lips need special care to stay soft and healthy.

Different Lip Care Products and What They Do

Now that you know the importance of lip care routine, let’s understand what different lip care products do:

    Lip Balms

A lip balm should be a must-have in your lip care routine. Lip balms (潤唇膏) are wax-based products and act as an occlusive barrier. They create a seal between your lips and the environment, preventing moisture from escaping and stopping cold weather or wind from causing dryness.

Lip balms also have healing properties. They can soothe chapped, cracked, or dry lips. In addition to waxes, lip balms have the following:

Occlusives — Petroleum jelly and lanolin are commonly used to lock in moisture.

Emollients — Shea butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil are added to soften and nourish rough patches on your lips.

Humectants — Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are sometimes included to attract water to the lips.

Most lip balms have a distinct, delicious fragrance. This is caused by essential oils or flavor oils.

    Lip Scrubs

Exfoliation is another integral part of a lip care routine. You need a high-quality lip scrub to remove dead skin on your lips that may be causing darkening or dryness.

Just as you use a scrub for your face and body, gently exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub. You don’t need to do this every day, given how delicate the skin can be. If your lips are visibly dry, use a lip scrub once a week. But if your lips are generally smooth and soft, twice a month should do the trick.

    Hydrating Lip Masks

Hydrating lip masks are designed to provide deep nourishment for lips that are extremely flaky, cracked, or damaged. Unlike lip balms and scrubs, which protect the surface, lip masks contain richer ingredients that penetrate more deeply.

Many hydrating lip masks contain ingredients that improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of vertical lip lines for a fuller look. This includes natural oils, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins.

    Lip Sunscreen

Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause lip darkening, thinning, and dryness. This is why it’s important to use lip care products that have SPF.

SPF lip balm protects from UV damage. It can prevent premature aging and keep your lips hydrated and soft.

    Lip Oils

If heavy lip masks aren’t your thing, you can use lip oils. These are incredibly lightweight but have moisturizing benefits, containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or vitamin E.

Moreover, lip oils can give your lips a shiny and luxurious gloss that lasts all day.
